What Is Ultrasound Therapy?

Learn what coditions ultrasound therapy is beneficial for.

Therapeutic Ultrasound Therapy

Accelerate Healing and Reduce Pain

Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to promote healing in injured tissues, reduce pain, and improve recovery. It is commonly used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

At Kyah Family Health Studio, ultrasound therapy may be incorporated into your treatment plan to help support the body's natural healing process and improve recovery outcomes.

What Is Therapeutic Ultrasound?

Unlike diagnostic ultrasound used to create images, therapeutic ultrasound delivers high-frequency sound waves into targeted tissues. These sound waves create mechanical and thermal effects within the body that can help stimulate tissue repair, increase circulation, and reduce inflammation.

Treatment is painless, non-invasive, and typically takes only a few minutes to perform.

How Does Ultrasound Therapy Work?

The ultrasound applicator is moved over the affected area using a conductive gel. The sound waves penetrate beneath the skin to reach deeper tissues that may be difficult to target with other treatment methods.

Potential benefits include:

  • Increased blood flow and circulation

  • Reduced pain and discomfort

  • Improved tissue healing

  • Reduced muscle tension

  • Decreased inflammation

  • Improved tissue flexibility and mobility

  • Enhanced recovery following injury

Conditions Commonly Treated

  • Tendonitis

  • Tendinopathy

  • Rotator cuff injuries

  • Achilles tendon pain

  • Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow

What to Expect During Treatment

Your practitioner will assess your condition and determine whether ultrasound therapy is appropriate for your specific injury or concern.

During treatment:

  1. A small amount of gel is applied to the treatment area.

  2. The ultrasound applicator is moved gently over the skin.

  3. Most patients feel little to no sensation, although some may notice mild warmth.

  4. Treatment typically lasts between 5 and 10 minutes depending on the area being treated.

Ultrasound therapy is often combined with other treatment approaches to achieve the best results.

Is Ultrasound Therapy Right for You?

Therapeutic ultrasound can be an effective addition to treatment for many acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive care plan that may include hands-on therapy, rehabilitation exercises, movement education, and lifestyle recommendations.

Our practitioners will determine whether ultrasound therapy is appropriate based on your condition, goals, and overall health.
